About Me:

Welcome to my website!  My name is Kristy Throndson and I live on Catalina Island with my husband and two year old daughter.  I grew up in central New Jersey in the 70's and 80's.  As a child, my imagination ran wild and I spent most of my time creating art and later, also, making music.  Although I loved playing the oboe almost as much as painting and drawing, stage fright prevented me from developing my musical abilities any further.

Education

I attended the Maryland Institute, College of Art in Baltimore from 1991 - 1996.   During my time there I explored and experimented with countless outlets for my undisciplined creativity, including printmaking, photography, sculpting with wood, weaving, ceramics and more but my true passion was for oil painting.  The smell of linseed oil gives me a warm, fuzzy feeling to this day.  I studied master painting techniques for much of my schooling which translates into long tedious hours of painting statues, still lifes and lots of naked people.

Life & Unexpected Paths

I graduated from MICA in 1996 with a BFA in Painting.  My life took many unexpected paths through the years that followed, including, moving back to NJ, marriage then divorce, becoming an exterior house-painting fore(wo)man, number crunching in NYC for a supply-chain software development company, buying an old classic sailboat and outfitting it to sail around the world, uprooting myself and moving to Southern California (with the boat, dog and boyfriend), living aboard that sailboat for a total of 5 years but never making it any further than Catalina Island, managing a small hotel, working in various retail shops and restaurants, getting married again, becoming a mom and much more.  But through it all, I have always needed to create.

Life in Paradise

Now that I live on Catalina Island, a place of overwhelming inspiration and beauty, making art has never felt so effortless.  My ideas tend to have a mind of their own though and I often find myself having to "reel them in".  Remnants of my more crazy experiments are scattered throughout our apartment (to my husband's dismay).  Some, I can't bring myself to part with out of a belief that they will someday become something great.

Beautiful Catalina Island

This website is all about my love of Catalina Island and shaing my knowledge and the artwork that has been inspired by this wonderful place.  Please feel free to email me if you have any questions about anything you see on this website or would just like to share a Catalina experience.  Thank you so much for stopping by!
